Queer As Folk, when first broadcast in England, created quite a
fuss. Never had the world been exposed to such an "in-your-face"
gay dramatic series with everything exposed. Russell T. Davis writer,
creator, of the original series is based on Manchester's Queer Canal
Street. The thriving gay village in England's biggest northern city,
could never have imagined the impact of the series would have on
the community.
When the show was first released in the England there was "mayhem"
in the gay village. People flocked to Canal Street, the entertainment
media pounced on the village and many people were in search of the
illusions that the series created. Babylon, the mythical nightclub,
and the blue light street, attracted attention. What happened next
was a clash between the regular gay customers and the influx of
straight partygoers. The village once quiet was now awash in tourists,
straights... crashing into gay space!
The documentary explores the reaction of the events surrounding
the series and the effect it had on the gay village. A BBC Radio
reporter, hair stylist, AIDS Activist, some very bad nuns and the
recent winner of MR Gay UK are all interviewed to see what the fuss
is about. Click here to see a short clip.
